Oh East...

Burger Tour Part 9 – Lucky Chip at The Sebright Arms

Oh East London, I have been inside you too many times of late. You make me feel uncomfortable, dirty and uncool. You also remind me why I never want to be cool. Who really has the time to go to all the clubz and take all the drugz? I just want an early night in bed watching Jersey Shore.

Burger Tour is our special night out each month. London is too expensive to do more than one nice thing each month and we choose meat and pals to celebrate being poor and happy. This month we decided to go to the middle of an east end housing estate and check out the Lucky Chip Residency at The Sebright Arms, Hoxton.

Lucky Chip has a tidy little reputation as a stand alone business but as it’s a catering van and it’s -32 degrees, 90% of the time, we’ve avoided the venture thus far. Finding out it was now in a pub with seats and a roof was all we needed to make our decision.

We arrived at 4.30 on a Saturday and The Sebright wasn’t open. Strange but despite being a regular boozer it doesn’t open till 5 on a weekend and food isn’t served till 6….6.10 in our case. A salvaged traffic light hangs on the wall. Unnoticeable at first, this traffic light is the dictator in the room. A burger ordering Hitler. It’s not explained to you anywhere, there wasn’t even whispers, but you can’t order your food before the aubsolutist powers that be turn on the green light of hope and freedom. Demz da rulez. Noone will tell you the rulez (except for me) but demz definitely da rulez. The whole thing gave me stress pains.

At 6.10 all of East London descended on the tills. We were next to the bar and ended up 15th in the queue. All these East End kids must train for this sort of event, with 20 pop up restaurants a day, they need to be stealth. I hate the whole system but I did like that they took our names and instead of giving us a shitty wooden spoon with a number on, they remembered us. Imagine! It’s almost like they care about who they’re serving. Like Starbucks but authentic right?

We didn’t wait too long really for our paper plates came holding the hunks of love. We ordered the Royale x3 (not chicken like Burger King), Kevin Bacon and El Chappo. We had 1 side of normal fries, one fries with cheese (that will be £2 extra please) and a popcorn chicken.

First thing to note is we couldn’t really tell the difference between the Royale and Kevin Bacon except price and maybe one had a seeded bun? Both were good, juicy and well flavoured though. A bit too salty but with a delicious sweet crunch on the bottom. The bacon was sweet and the pickles crisp. The El Chappo was moist and heated. The spice was a little overpowering but still pleasing. Buns were disappointing. Simple and under a Tesco Finest standard.

The fries were good, salted well, crispy but fluffy, skins on. Maybe some of the best we’ve had so far on tour. The negative comes with the additional cheese on the second order of fries. It was like catering cheddar you get at school. Tasteless, pointless, profit boosting and chip ruining. The popcorn chicken was by far the biggest disappointment. £4.50 for 5 little bites of average chicken with a dip! Outfuckingrageous! Needless to say anything outside of regular fries is not recommended.

Service was average, they remembered our name for food but everything seemed effortful outside of that. The paper plates were a big hint of how little energy they wanted to exert in the clear up. We’re indoors, let’s act like it, yeah?

In summary The Sebright Arms is a largely average pub and I think Lucky Chip is upping its takings 5000% at the moment from buzz alone. The whole place was rammed with middle class annoying hipsters. We were sat next to a guy that looked like Moby that insisted on snacking on his dates face before his food arrived and the wine served was corked and overpriced. Not a great experience in total but if you wanted a nice snack and live in a 0.4 mile radius to the Sebright, it’s worth a visit.

Burger tour will continue the first weekend of every month until we are sick of burgers.

Burger Tour Part 8 – Patty and Bun
WE ARE BACKKK! It’s taken me...

Burger Tour Part 8 – Patty and Bun

WE ARE BACKKK! It’s taken me a month and a bit to write this but rest assured 2013 is the continuation of our love affair with meat in carbs. We burst back onto the scene by going to Patty and Bun.

I was gunna do this reallll quick to give you a sense of how we felt on this edition of Burger Tour, but I like to write it out. Vent if you will…

We got there at 11.45 (AM!) to join a ridiculous queue of hungry punters. The masses have heard about the meat and when people want food in London, they will queue for hours (note: breakfast club). Opening at 12 they frog-marched people in, let a big family with a pram jump queue (note: unacceptable) and gave us menus before we’d taken our coats off.

We had maybe a minute before being asked for drinks, we said come back in 5, in another minute we were asked again and then again for drinks and burger choice. By 12.05 we felt bullied and broken. Like Bruce Bogtrotter being forced to ram that ton of chocolate cake down his chubby little neck. For a company ‘passionate’ about comfort food, I’ve never felt more uncomfortable. LET US HAVE A CONVERSATION MANN!!!

We ordered the Ari Gold (x2), Hot Chic and Smokey Robinson burgers. We also had the wings on recommendation from our third waitress in 5 minutes, the one with fiery hair, wearing tiny denim hotpants over knitted leggings FYI.

The service was poor except for her. We were served out of order to the line that came in and the chefs took their sweet little time. All the beef burgers were served with the wings and fries. The Chic burger came about 10 minutes later, dry, burnt and well below average.

The beef burgers were pretty good. Juicy, smothered in American cheese (a cheese slice) and sweet beautiful bacon. A bit too salty but good. The wings were incredible. Sweet, sticky, messy, joyful. The meat fell off the bone and into our greedy little mouths. The fries were super salty and Super Dry. Almost as bad as the brand. They’d been fried until the insides had shriveled away from the core potato wall. A poor fryman was in charge of this batch and then tried to cover up the big ol’ mess with a bucket of rosemary salt. Not cool bro.

Anyway ratings are:

Burger (meat only) 8.5/10

Chicken burger: 3/10

Bun: 8/10

Toppings: 8/10

Fries: 3/10

Wings: 10 /10

Service: 4/10

Price : 6 / 10

The whole trip smacked of insincerity. Hopping on the back of the burger trend wagon and getting a bit of buzz by being central. The staff all bar the fiery girl were all super annoying and a bit incompetent (lets not talk about the issues paying, OK?). Prices were pretty steep and the food was low. A good core burger and nice wings save this from the bottom of the list.

NEXT TRIP: Lucky Chip residency at The Sebright Arms

Burger tour will continue the first weekend of every month until we are sick of burgers.

when kids give pep talks…its frickin’ awesome!

when kids give pep talks…its frickin’ awesome!

a tiny tree beard to brighten up your day.

CHRISTMAS IS HEEERRRREEEE *runs...

Burger Tour Part 7- Haché Burger

CHRISTMAS IS HEEERRRREEEE *runs around hugging everyone and stealing fruity cocktails from the free bar*

I have now had 5 Christmas dinners with another 3 meals scheduled. I’ve even managed to sneak a steak and some lamb out of two of the restaurants because so many places have told me their turkey is not gluten free. If anyone knows how plain turkey is wheat laden, I’d love to know.

As it’s Christmas, we needed to go on a Christmas Burger Tour to celebrate a year of meat eating and fine friendship. This means that we added ‘Christmas’ as a prefix to the tour name and had to book a table because everywhere in London is bursting with tourists, cold people and those forced to have fun as ‘tis the season’. Haché is probably the only burger restaurant that lets you book anywhere in London so that’s where we went. Plus it had a good review from a pal. Mainly the booking thing though.

Kelly and Dan arrived before us, which was like a gift only Santa himself could have delivered. We settled at the back out of the way (my favourite place to be). The staff were friendly and it was dimly lit which made it a little romantic on such a cold night.

The menu at Haché is pretty special, 30 burgers in total covering all the core meat categories including fish and duck. You get a choice of bun (Ciabatta or Brioche) OR salad, which I had, loathingly. The buns were freshly made and beautiful. Sweet and soaked in meat juices. My salad was actually good too. I’m very fussy with salads and most places try to over impress. I only like normal non-fluffy lettuce, cucumber, maybe 3 tomatoes and baby spinach. They catered to my needs like an old friend. They even chopped out the watery bits out of the cucumber. Perfection.

As purists, we all chose beef burgers. Kelly had the Spanish, Dan the Catalan, Ricky the all day breakfast and me the Bavarian. Now the others burgers looked lovely n all…Ricky got his beloved egg on top, Kelly had goats cheese and Dan chorizo blah blah blah but MINE WAS THE BEST THING EVER. Look at the picture! Look at it! The Bavarian cheese was a thick layer that was so hefty it just looks like a bun lid. It was burger fondue! It was a Christmas miracle! I have officially rated my burger the best burger we’ve had so far in terms of content alone. The meat was incredible. Rare and juicy. So well seasoned, they fell apart in the mouth. Honest Burgers was great but this was godlike in taste and structure.

The only things letting down the experience were the side dishes. The sides made me very sad. The fries were ok, a bit McDonalds-like, unseasoned and floppy. The onion rings were greasy and contained around 1% onion. The sweet potato fries, which would usually make me giddy, disappointed. They weren’t crisp enough and just really smushy in the mouth. I don’t like my food smushy. Unless its baked beans. Baked beans HAVE to be smushy and thick.

Anyway ratings are:

Burger (meat only) 10/10

Bun: 8.9/10 from the others

Salad: 8/10

Toppings: 10/10

Fries & Sides: 5.5/10

Service: 8/10

Price : 8.5 / 10

There was the space to sit, talk, drink and be. A bit too dark by the end of the night and you felt ready for a nap afterwards but all in all, a very successful seasonal meat eat.

We will be back in 2013 but until then,

HAVE AN AMAZING CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR BURGER FIENDS!

I am the best girlfriend. It’s a well-known fact. As an example of how awesome I am, I bought Ricky and I tickets to fly to Copenhagen to visit his bestest pal, Ali and his lass for our anniversary. I kept it a secret and everything. Like I say, Best. Girlfriend.

Copenhagen is cold, beautiful and full of 7/11’s and coffee shops. We walked a lot and sat in pubs filled with smoke. We went to sample sales and looked at designer things we cant afford. We bounced on street trampolines and watched documentaries on bees. We embodied culture*

On the Friday eve we embarked on an international version of Burger Tour. I Googled ‘Best Ever Burger in Copenhagen’ and I didn’t understand any of the results because Google thinks you understand Danish as soon as you arrive in Denmark. ‘Halifax’ seemed to pop up a lot though. My Dad’s from Halifax, Nova Scotia and he’s turned out pretty well so it seemed like a good omen.

Ali had been before and confirmed it’s best evah status, so off we popped, all bundled up like snug bugs in the harsh breeze. There’s no booking here (turns out its not just London that plays by this rule) so we waited around an hour for our meat fest. Fine though because there’s loads of places around and everyone had moustaches to look at because Danish people fucking LOVE Movember.

The staff were super nice. Especially this one lovely looking man with a moustache. The menu is diverse and worldly with 9 cities/states covered off. Ali chose a Nakskov Burger, which has every topping a fancy burger should have and more….remoulade anyone? Ricky had the Liverpool Burger because the egg was too much for him to resist. Many times he has stated now that an egg is his favourite topping, yet no one in London has listened to his cries.

I’m a lot stricter (fussier) with my gluten free diet now, because it makes me want to die when I enjoy a bit of dough. Although I hate my body for making me feel like this, I’m a little bit thankful because without this ‘no bread’ pressure I would have never chosen the Zurich Burger. I bartered with the waiter and got 2 potato rosti’s instead of one with a burger bun bottom, and a gluten free guarantee (I don’t think he really understood me though so I’m not saying any other ‘No to Wheat, Yes to Meat’-ers should trust my gluten free ok on this place.

The burgers were pretty bloody lovely. Soft and packed with flavour. The toppings are magnifique. Someone actually sat and thought about this menu and the sauces and the combinations. You can tell and it’s so rare to feel such a care for it. I am however skeptical that Biarritz is heavily into chilli-fried mushrooms.

The buns are homemade sesame seed buns, which makes me squeal with glee. I love places that make everything from scratch. Bakers and meat shapers, these boys knew what was up when they started. I didn’t eat one but I was told they were pretty damn good. Even if they weren’t Its still nice to not have a Warburton’s spesh holding your patty.

The fries were actually potato wedges but they tasted like potato skins that you get in a lovely (cheap) Italian restaurant. I love potato skins so these were an absolute winner. I smeared all mine with my home spiecd butter, from on top of my rosti burger to make it feel fancy.

Ratings are:

Burger (meat only) 7.8 / 10 –the meat wasn’t as rare/medium as we prefer but it was cooked and seasoned well and tasted totes Danish

Bun: 8.9 / 10 from the boys

Rostis: 7.4 / 10 – a little greasy but you really can’t complain when you are given another option for your burgers carb coat,

Toppings: 10/10

Fries: 8.7/10

Service: 10/10

Price : 8.5 / 10

We were able to sit and chat and admire the nice art on the walls after the feast. I also enjoyed the facilities. Clean, fresh towels and posh soap. I always appreciate a good ceramic haven.

I don’t think I could not recommend Halifax to anyone. It’s everything you could want. Good food, good service, a no rush attitude, decent price… Burger Tour, I have decided, is officially not all about the burger. It is the environment and style and based on that, Halifax tops the list.

The next Burger Tour will be a Christmas Special. Lets hope it’s more like the joy of Harry Potter on ITV back to back, than the Eastender’s misery of death and divorce.

* TWO DANISH WORDS YOU NEED TO KNOW / THE ONLY DANISH WORDS I KNOW

Snable-a – this is literally translated as elephant trunk ‘a’. It is the word for an @ symbol

Hoogly- this means if something is snuggly and warm A general feeling of lushness.

It is winter. Oxford street...

Burger Tour Part 5 – Dirty Burger

It is winter. Oxford street has it’s lights up, my massive mittens are out and everyone has decided to enter the pit of London to buy shit that you can buy in Slough but with a more ‘magical’ feeling as you purchase.

On a cold Saturday evening we trekked the 10 whole minutes from Kentish Town tube to Dirty Burger. Me and Ricky observed the back entrance of Pizza East (where Dirty Burger is secretely situated) and quickly got embarrassed when we entered to find no waiting staff or sensible table structure. We exited and faced the bitter elements for Kelly and Dan . After 5 minutes it was too cold for my delicate bones and we went to The Vine across the road. As a side note, The Vine is a super lovely establishment. It has a heated terrace and massive candles on the table that you can destroy without any interference. The toilets are also really nice.

After 50 minutes we eventually had the full tour team and shuffled back to Dirty Burger. Because we’re so famous now, as soon as we entered 4 people left their stools, allowing us a window spot to enjoy our burgers. The window overlooked the bins.

There is one burger on offer, crinkle cut chips and crispy onion things that I like to call ‘onion poppers’. Because of the limited menu I had to discard my new gluten free diet and purposely poison my body. It was such nice poison though. Dirty, juicy, sweet, greasy posion. The burger was intensely good. Caramelized and succulent. Covered in dripping cheese and steamed in the bun. The vegetable bit was still crispy and vaguely tasted of health.

The chips were good. I’m still not convinced they were freshly chopped but I do like a point of difference (PoD to all the marketing and product development aficionados out thurr) in my fries. A fancy shaped chip gives all eaters a warm feeling. Emotions related to past childhood obesity and comfort binges. Think of all those ill-advised smileys and you’ll understand.

The onion poppers were a triumph. Cooked in that all important, hot fat, they were so crispy. Full of oniony goodness on the inside they were a tasty treat. I say treat like it’s an optional extra but really, if you don’t buy them with your burger and fries, I don’t know why you even bothered to venture out here.

The scoreboard is a pleasure to present to you:

Burger (meat only): 9 / 10 - would have been higher if the burger was served medium rare

Bun: 9/10

Toppings: 9/10 (simple but executed perfectly)

Fries: 7/10

Onion Poppers: 9/10

Service: 7/10

Price 9.5 / 10

We all finished with a feeling of guilt. It was the sort of visceral experience that left you wanting a cigarette and a tummy rub. This however could not happen. Dirty Burger is not an environment you stick around for drinks in, very much an in ‘n’ out place. Like the finest of escorts, it had done its job, filled you up and there was little need for conversation afterwards. There was a queue of hungry patrons awaiting their own cathartic release and who were we to deny them? With a shuffle that was more of a squirm, passing those on the ‘big boys table’ we left to enjoy some more of The Vine’s classy candles and abundance of gin.

On the next Burger Tour, me and Ricky literally fly duo to Copenhagen to sample some Scandi-style meat.

Burger Tour Part 4 – Burger Off
Apologies for an extremely...

Burger Tour Part 4 – Burger Off

Apologies for an extremely belated Burger Tour blog post meat fans,

On the last sunny hot day of the year (yes that long ago) we took Burger Tour to Brighton. We did a lot of research but it turns out Brighton doesn’t really specialize in big hunks of meat in that way. We’re all super poor because we live in London so we settled on Burger Off, a back street sketchy looking place with maybe the cheapest fresh burgers in the South on offer.

The journey down was a delight. Dan and Kelly were their usual late selves and we stood on a train for an hour and half, crammed in by pastey skinned ‘suverners’ in search of a bit of sun burn. I wasn’t hating for too long though. Dexter and Coco the pups joined us and Brighton is generally a happy place full of shops that sells things I would spend all my money on if I had any. Ricky was pretty buzzed too because there was a car thing on. We let him explore after the burgers and he met all the engines he’d dreamt of meeting since he was a kid.

Anyway, on to the real reason why you’re reading this, BURGERZ! Firstly, Burger Off is a very good name for a burger place. Catchy, memorable, punchy….yep ANNND despite it looking like the café in Eastender’s before Ian’s latest ‘renovation’ work, it’s a nice little space. Retro chic, but in a way that no one would ever try and sell you the furniture from that era.

The head chef / meat manager was super nice to us and set to our mammoth order. I had a doubled up topped up massive burger thing. So did Ricky. Kelly had a healthy burger (in that it was singular and not with bacon and onion rings) and Dan chose one with peanut butter on. That choice alone helped me to tell myself that I had made a wiser, healthier lifestyle choice. There was lettuce and onion in it too. They may have been covered in mayo and batter but the health was still in there. Somewhere.

I’ll begin with the good. Firstly the price is amazing for fresh meat burgers. All of our orders came under £25 including chips, dips and drinks. The meat manager told us he hadn’t changed his prices in 6 years. Given that good happy meat is super expensive it reassured my purse but worried my pallet and moral sense. In all honesty though we weren’t expecting the joy that the likes of Honest Burgers gave us. We just wanted some snax on a sunny day that we could eat whilst we looking at all the dogs cruising by us.

The burgers were ok. Not awful, not bad just y’know…ok. Too thin to be juicy but definitely flavoursome. The bun was a standard chip shop bun but the American cheese was melted nicely and the onion rings were crispy and sweet. It all smushed together (like Snooki and Vinnie) in a disgusting but quite romantic way.

Our scoreboard is:

Burger (meat only) 5.5 / 10

Bun: 5 / 10

Toppings 6.5 / 10 *could have been improved if they’d used chunky peanut butter and maybe a special burger sauce

Service 9 / 10

Price 9.5 / 10

All in all it was a decent experience. Great service, lovely owner and well seasoned meat all served on a great day out. I’d recommend this place as a good takeaway destination for the yoofs out there. In retail terms it is the equivalent of a Morrison’s . Market fresh, affordable but still fairly low grade.

Next Burger Tour we are going to the Slider Bar in Soho. I’m pretty excited. You should be too. STAY TUNED MEAT LOVERS.

PS The chips were fucking horrible. So I haven’t included them in any of this review because they don’t deserve it. I’m still mad at them.

A Bearded Man to Sleep With Every Night

Today we did a very brave...

Burger Tour Part 3 – Honest Burgers

Today we did a very brave thing. We went south. We never go to South London let alone Brixton. Honestly if somewhere has a song written about its guns and gangs, why would anyone really want to go. The only other time I’ve been to Brixton was to see Glassjaw for 7/7/7. A homeless woman attacked me and they didn’t let me outside to smoke. I stayed in a hotel that was also part of a car wash and I heard quite a lot of people doing things I never wanted to hear. I guess times have changed though. Maybe…

A short 5 minute walk from Brixton station through the sea of stalls selling plastic buckets there is Brixton Village. A lovely little place filled with cafés and boutiquey shops selling baby grows and books about hip hop. In amongst these is Honest Burgers. A tiny restaurant with about 5 seats inside and 10 outside. There’s no booking here so we put our name on the list and 20 minutes later they were prepared for our grand arrival.

Honest Burgers is a restaurant inspired by great British produce. This doesn’t mean it has chart posters on its walls telling you exactly where all the meat came from finishing with a happy faced cow, nor does it have a flyer on every menu convincing you of how amazing you actually are for choosing to eat something that walked around less than 2 metres from you sit. It simply means good food, grown well and cooked brilliantly.

First we all ordered their homemade lemonade, which is served in little jam jars with handles and a fancy straw. A bit like grandma used to make except no ones grandma ever really did. It was SO good. The right amount of sweet and sharp. I nearly strawpedo-ed the lot. At £2.50 quite pricey but definitely worth it.

Then we (me and Ricky) ordered ‘The Honest’ which is made up of a thick ball patty of ginger pig dry aged beef, red onion relish, smoked bacon, mature cheddar, thinly sliced pickle and crisp lettuce. All served on a toasted glazed bun and with triple fried chips seasoned with rosemary salt. Kelly and Dan shared ‘The Honest’ and a house special which today had a fine mixture of beef, chorizo, chilli puree, chimichurri sauces and other spicy and sweet elements that I cant remember. The service was so good that the waitress served up the burgers already split for them to enjoy.

I know we’re only at Part 3 on the burger tour but this is the hands down winner so far. It is true to it’s name, it’s honest and simple food made great. It was like a little flavour orgy with each bite. Not the sloppy orgy’s you find on the free websites, like a properly constructed and choreographed orgy where everybody cums at the same time. B-E-A-UTIFUL

The bun was soft but crispy. The red onion relish was sweet and tangy. The bacon was smokey, sweet, crispy and so damn tasty. The lettuce was as lettuce should be. The cheese was there but melted together with the beautiful cow patty to make it so much more intense. Even the pickle which I’m not usually a fan of, was sliced so finely that it was a fitting bottom layer adding a tang to even out the sweet on top. This burger was really really special. All the elements were cooked so well including the medium rare juicy burger. Nothing needed seasoning. We barely used other sauces on the table because we didn’t want to take away from its perfection. If that isn’t a sign of fine dining I don’t know what is.

I didn’t try the chorizo burger but it got a strong commendation from the Taylor-Smiths. It packed a juicy little punch and the chorizo was so well cooked that Dan thought they’d cooked it inside the burger instead of layering it on top. Melty meat may be the best type.

A paragraph must be dedicated to the fries (chips) now. They are above all other chips. Anything triple fried is so damn good but these were just…just everything ever invented in one amazing mouth moment. Super crispy with a bit of fluff inside them. Skins still on for the health fiends that like some extra roughage to help with regualrity. Seasoned with rosemary salt. I didn’t know there was such a thing as rosemary salt but I’m going to google ‘best ever rosemary salt recipe’ soon to find out how you create the fancy stuff. Again non of us needed to season anything on top.

The only downside to the trip was the coleslaw. It was a bit bland in comparison to the rest of the feast. But I’m not going to go into that because I love this burger joint and as with all things you love, there are elements that you won’t love as much. I fully believe that it’s quite healthy to brush over these flaws because everything else is perfect in a godly sense.

Ratings set out as usual are:

Burger (meat only) 9.8 / 10

Bun: 9.8 / 10

Toppings: 10 / 10

Fries: 324258924/ 10

Sides (Coleslaw): 4/10

Price wise it was amazing. For 1 x special burger, 3 x the most expensive burgers (and all came with free super fries), 6 lemonades and a side it was less than £55! I can’t wait until this puppy opens up their Soho version so I can eat there every week with work. I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to schmooze with business folks than showing them a good burger time without breaking their expense accounts.

EVERYBODY MUST GO THERE NOW

*except when I want to go because there’s a no booking policy and I don’t want to wait because word got out that this place is heavenly (this is now called ‘the MEATmarket effect)

Burger tour will continue the first weekend of every month until we are sick of burgers.

Meet the Superhumans. Channel 4 just made the Paralympics the...

Meet the Superhumans. Channel 4 just made the Paralympics the most inspirational and important event this Summer.

Numb Bears and a handful of Mini Max

Numb Bears and a handful of Mini Max

Photo
